Why Symptoms of TMJ/TMD Need To Be Treated?

The joint that connects your jaw bone to your skull is known as the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint that allows for the movement of the jaw bone up and down and side to side when chewing or talking.

TMD, TMJ (Temporomandibular disorders) are a set of problems that affect the control of the muscle and jaw bone. The exact cause of the disorder is still unknown. However, experts think it results from:

  • Injuries to the jaw, muscles of the neck or head as well as the joint directly
  • Putting pressure on the joint through extended grinding or clenching of the teeth
  • Displacement of the soft disc or cushion between the joint
  • The joint being affected by arthritis

Common symptoms of TMJ, TMD include:

  • Difficulty opening mouth wide
  • Locked or stuck jaws
  • Tired feeling in the face
  • Pain or tenderness in the face in the jaw, shoulder or neck area
  • Difficulty chewing

Treatments

Talk to your dentist about TMD treatments. The treatment provided will depend on what the dentist thinks to be the underlying cause of the disorder. You can get prescribed medications to help relieve stress or pain. Your dentist an also prescribe medication to relax your jaw and stop you from clenching or grinding your teeth.

Your dentist can provide you with a splint or night guard to prevent your lower and upper teeth from touching. This reduces the effects of grinding or clenching.

Dental work may also be necessary to reduce any bite problems that may be causing an imbalance.
